Quinta da Romaneira was already marked on Forrester’s map.

Quinta da Romaneira has a long history and was already marked on Forrester’s map. It was founded in 1813 and the property successively belonged to the families of Sousa Guimaraes, de Lacerda, and Monteiro de Barros, who enlarged the quinta to its present size in the 1940s.

Since the early days, Quinta da Romaneira has expanded significantly and included 12 former quintas in the Romaneira vineyard and is now one of the largest properties in Douro. The quintas now included in Quinta da Romaneira are: do Abade, do Penedo Marçal, do Marhadal Velho, das Liceiras, da Carrapata (formerly two quintas, do Malheiros and da Dona Esménia), do Bairral (formerly two quintas, da Cima and de Baixo), do Malhadal Novo, do Esporão, da Fonte do Mouro, da Barca, de Escravelheira and da Pulga.

In 1967 Antonio Borges Vinagre acquired the quinta, and thus, the Quinta was controlled by Borges & Irmão through the personal ownership of António Borges Vinagre. After his death in 1989 the quinta was run jointly by daughter and son.

Quinta da Romaneira begun bottling and selling its own vintage port in modern time in 1986 due to the change in rules this year, allowing growers in Douro to ship their wines themselves. Before 1986 the property mainly sold its wines in bulk to other shippers.

In 2004 a group of investors, joined by investment group IDI, acquired the property. The Managing Director since 2004, Christian Seely, is also Managing Director of Quinta do Noval.

End of 2012 IDI has sold the property but it is not official who is the new owner.
