Garnett's Brothers Ltd
Founded | 1896 |
---|
The company was founded in 1896 by the brothers William Thomas Garnett (1855-1921) and George Henry Garnett (1859-1944). William Thomas had a background at Hay & Sons, wine & spirit merchants of Norfolk Street, Sheffield. The Garnett brothers took over a shop at 29 High Street, Rotherham. They also had several off-licence shops, several in Sheffield, and they were also selling tobacco, cigars, ale and stout with their own bottling. In 1908 they formed a private limited company. In the 1920s the company was run by George Henry's two sons, Henry Redge Garnett and George Bromley Garnett and in 1923 William Thomas’s grandson Albert Garnet Shepard joined the company. Albert Garnet Shepard was one of the final two managing directors from 1949 and until 1963 when the company was sold to Bass Group, a brewery.
The company bottled various imported wines. In 1963 they were area distibutors for Dow's ports and Old Priory port.
