Gilbert, G Port |
The first Gilberts were French Huguenots who were forced to emigrate to Prussia in the 18th century as a result of the Catholic prosecution of Protestants. Karl Gilbert, an eminent merchant in the wine trade and born in 1875, married his cousin Nanni, daughter of Gustav Burmester, in Porto. In 1952 his sons Helmut and Arnold bought a Port House founded 1914 by Alcino Correia Ribeiro, and the house Gilberts was founded.
Gilbert's was re-launched and re-positioned as ‘G Porto’ by Gilbert's in 2001 with Vintage 1999 as the first Vintage ‘G Port’. The intention was to attract younger port wine lovers Gilberts having been taken over by the Amorim family by the end of 1999. The Amorim family started its activity in 1870, with the manufacture and sale of Port Wine corks but sold Gilberts already in 2005 to Sogevinus.
