For at least five generations the Nicolau de Almeida family has been in the Douro valley and have definitively made a mark. Fernando Nicolau de Almeida was the creator of the famous Barca Velha red wine from Ferreira.
In 1949 Fernando and his wife Maria José Ramos Pinto Rosas got a son - João Nicolau de Almeida. João started working at Ramos Pinto already in 1976 and stayed in the company until his retirement. During his career João contributed to the modernization of the viticulture of the Douro Valley, suggesting vertical planting in some vineyards and he also studied the different varieties.
In 1993 he found an area in the Douro Superior he thought would be perfect for wine growing. This was the start of Quinta do Monte Xisto. Many years later, in 2005, he planted the vineyard together with his sons Mateus and João Nicolau de Almeida Jr, also his daughter Mafalda is involved in the business.
The first Vintage Port from the quinta was produced in 2019 under the Nicolau de Almeida brand.

Taste | Medium body. Very easy to drink with round tannins. Balanced with lots of dark berries and fruit in the mouth. Lovely, quite long and quite promising finish but maybe a little light port? | ||
