Quinta da Eira Velha
Quinta da Eira Velha
Founded | 1978 |

Owner | Fladgate Partnership (Taylor-Fonseca Group) |
This quinta has documented the date of the property to the beginning of the 16th century i.e. 1513. It was used as a single quinta port of Cockburn and was bought by the firm Hunt Roope in 1893 and was the main component of Hunt, Roope & Co.’s Tuke Holdsworth Vintage Port. Between 1918 and 1938 it was used to make Graham before supplying Ferreira. Eira Velha was bought by the Newman’s in 1938 and has before been owned by one of the most famous port figures in history of port, Cable Roope, who was a partner in the port house Hunt Roope. They had bought the quinta in 1893 and its grapes for port since 1809. Hunt also made a Single Quinta from Eira Velha. The Newman family has deep roots in the port trade dating back to 1679.
Ferreira bought the firm of Hunt Roope in 1956 and the Newman family retained the Quinta. In 1979 an arrangement was made with the Cockburn to manage the quinta on behalf of the Newmans. Quinta da Eira Velha was also marketed as an exceptional single quinta wine; the vintage 1978 under the Cockburn brand and thereafter under the Martinez label, with the vintage 2000 being the last Eira Velha single quinta produced by Martinez.
The two Englishmen Peter and Richard Newman, from the Newman family sold this marvellous quinta to the Taylor Fonseca group in 2007.
