Quinta de Vargellas

Quinta de Vargellas - Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman

Owner Fladgate Partnership (Taylor-Fonseca Group)

This quinta belongs to Taylor.

Situated high in the mountain reaches of the Upper Douro, Quinta de Vargellas is the jewel in Taylor’s crown. It has been prized as a source of the finest ports since the 1820s. By the 1820s Vargellas had become established as a source of the finest Ports. The first recorded owner of Lower Vargellas, Bernardo de Brito e Cunha, sold his wine on the English market. Upper Vargellas, the most easterly vineyard, belonged for many years to the Ferreira family who for a time also leased the middle property. Correspondence from 1836 indicates that these vineyards were also prized as a source of outstanding wines. By the early 1880s the production of all three Vargellas properties had fallen dramatically as the vines were weak and finally destroyed by the lethal parasite. In 1893, at the time when phylloxera was most destructive in the area, the harvest at the Quinta was only four to six pipes.

The estate was as mentioned above originally made up of three separate properties, Upper, Middle and Lower Vargellas. In 1893, Domingos Burguets sold Middle and Lower Vargellas to Taylor’s and in 1896 the firm purchased also the third vineyard, Upper Vargellas, from the Countess of Azambuja, daughter of Dona Antónia Ferreira and were a single property.

By the time of the famous years of 1908 and 1912, Vargellas was producing 100 of the 300 or so pipes Taylor’s declared as a Vintage. Quinta de Vargellas is also bottled as a Special Quinta or Single Quinta Vintage Port, in years when an overall Taylor’s Vintage is not declared, made from grapes grown entirely on the quinta. The reputation of these wines has acquired a stature greater than that of many shippers declared vintages. In the 1990s, the estate was extended westwards with the purchase of the adjacent vineyard of São Xisto to form the quinta’s current boundaries.

Vinha Velha

The old walled terraces of the Vinha Velha represent the original part of the Vargellas estate and contain its oldest vines. They have been classified as World Heritage and constitute one of the Douro Valley’s most impressive historic vineyards. The Vinha Velha, meaning Old Vineyard, is made up of five individual and distinct plots located above and to the west of the estate buildings. They are Polverinho, Gricha, Renova do Depósito, Renova do Armazém and Vinha Grande. These old terraced vineyards, some of whose dry stone walls were built two centuries ago, contain very old vines many of which are now over 100 years old. With the exception of Polverinho, which contains the single variety terraces planted by Dick Yeatman in 1927, the Vinha Velha contains mixed plantings of many different traditional grape varieties, some of which are seldom planted today. The Vinha Velha plots together represent more than 15 percent of the total production of the estate.
