The firm of Adriano Ramos Pinto was founded in 1880 by Adriano Ramos Pinto and his brother António but they did not start doing vintage port until 1917. Quinta de Bom Retiro was bought 1919 and 1933 Quinta de Urtiga was incorporated in Bom Retiro. Quinta de Ervamoira was named Quinta de Santa Maria but this name was already used by Cockburn why it was not possible to sell it under that name. Suzanne Chantel, a French historical novelist, published a novel called Ervamoira – the name of a small white flower indigenous to the Douro. It was the purely fictional saga of a family of port producers whose quinta was called Ervamoira. The description of this was as Ervamoira’s situation and contact was made with Suzanne Chantel who gave permission to use the name and she even came to the ceremony to ´christening´ the quinta. Quinta dos Bons Ares was purchased in 1985.

Since 1990 champagne house Louis Roederer is the majority shareholders in Adriano Ramos Pinto.

Ramos Pinto has a Museum which houses a spectacular collection of original posters, designed by some of the most famous artists of the 1920's.
