Senhora do Convento |
The Cistercian Monastery of São Pedro das Águias dates back to 1145. In 1834 the state terminated the sanction of religious orders and nationalized their lands and possessions. In 1986 São Pedro das Águias was bought by the Champagne house Vranken and the port brand São Pedro das Águias was established. Ten years later, in 1996, the estate came under the ownership of Madame Mauricette Mordant, as part of a divorce settlement from Paul Vranken. However, the Sao Pedro das Águias brand remained with the Vranken group and merged with Rozes in 2002. In 1998 Madame Mauricette Mordant expanded the vineyards of the original estate, Quinta do Convento, with three additional estates: Quinta das Heredias, Quinta do Espinhos, Quinta do Calçado. Based on grapes from these vineyards, a new brand was created, Heredias, with 1997 beeing the first vintage. A second brand, Senhora do Convento was also established, with 1999 as the first vintage. Heredias was only made until the vintage of 2001. The brand of Senhora do Convento remains, but now under new ownership.
In 2011 Montreal-based Colt Resources Inc. acquired 346 acres of property with a view to mining the tungsten underlying it. The property came with a vineyard, and the former Cistercian monastery, Convento de São Pedro das Águias. Colt Resources kept the brand Senhora do Convento but Heredias seems to not be used anymore.
Since 2018, Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias is part of Kranemann Wine Estates and is the main part of their new wine and wine tourism project in the Douro. Kranemann Wine Estates has added the new vintage port brand Kranemann.
