Vieira de Souza was created as a subsidiary to Barros Almeida & C:a. Manuel Barros asked the well-regarded Port blender Alcino Vieira de Souza to join and start a company with him and the house of Vieira de Souza was created. They used the brand Souza for their Vintage Port. When Alcino Vieira de Souza died in 1941 Barros took over the company. However, Sogevinus purchased Barros in 2006 and the name was discontinued.

In 2011 the family of Vieira de Sousa, with wine maker Luisa Borges, re-opened their family house. The same year she bottled her first Vintage Port, 2009, under the brand Vieira de Sousa. The new company, Sociedade Roncão Pequeno, Lda, was named after one of their Quintas. The winery, and home of the family, is situated at Quinta da Fonte.

To avoid confusion, it is worth mentioning that this company is not connected to Souza Guedes & Irmao, that is part of the Real Companhia Velha group.
